LG Mini Split H61 Error Code
Check your model first
- Cooling mode
- Heating mode
- Alternate displays
Match the model on your equipment label to the linked manufacturer documentation. The same code can mean different things across model families.
Quick answer
CH61 is LG's overheat protection: the outdoor heat exchanger overheats in cooling or the indoor unit overheats in heating (often a clogged filter or blocked airflow). Clean filters, clear ventilation around the outdoor unit, then power-cycle - CH61 does not clear on its own.
Severity: medium · DIY difficulty: easy
Safety
Stop at the breaker power-cycle and any plug-accessible checks (filters, remote settings, visible wiring). The outdoor unit's capacitor holds a lethal charge and the refrigerant circuit is both pressurized and (on R-32 units) flammable — opening panels or servicing the sealed system is licensed-technician work (EPA 608).
What H61 means
CH61 is displayed to protect the unit from overheating. In cooling, the outdoor unit's heat exchanger becomes too hot, usually because the area around the outdoor unit is not well ventilated and hot air accumulates. In heating, the indoor unit's internal temperature becomes too high, typically from a blocked air intake or clogged filter. LG notes the error will not clear automatically and requires a power cycle; depending on the model the same condition may display as P4, P6, P7, P8, or CH34. SplitAtlas adds the same DIY part: open ventilation windows/screens, clear objects around the outdoor unit, and clean the indoor filter before power cycling.
Code meaning varies by series
- Cooling mode: Outdoor unit heat-exchanger overheat protection - poor ventilation around the outdoor unit
- Heating mode: Indoor unit internal overheat protection - blocked air intake or clogged filter
- Alternate displays: Same condition may appear as P4, P6, P7, P8, or CH34 depending on model
First checks before service
1. One-time fault event (power disturbance or transient sensor reading) common DIY
Check: Power-cycle at the breaker/disconnect (or unplug for CPAP), restore, and run the system while watching for the code.
Fix: If the code does not return after a full run cycle, the fault was transient — monitor, no repair needed.
2. Fault persists after a clean reset occasional pro only
Check: If the code returns immediately or every session, note the conditions (startup, heating, after rain).
Fix: A persisting code points at the component the manual assigns to this code — that repair is technician territory.
