How to read a blink pattern (universal method)

Write the pattern down before power-cycling: some boards clear or change the blink pattern after a power loss, and the pattern is your only diagnostic clue.

  • Watch for 30+ seconds. Real fault patterns repeat: e.g. *3 blinks — pause — 3 blinks — pause*. The number between pauses is the code.
  • Note WHICH light flashes. Most units have three: RUN/OPERATION (green), TIMER (yellow/orange), and DEFROST/HEAT (red/orange). A *combination* (e.g. run blinks 2, timer blinks 5) is its own code — count each light separately.
  • Distinguish blink speed. A slow, counted pattern is a fault code. A rapid, continuous flash on the run light typically means indoor↔outdoor communication failure; a single slow flash every few seconds on a unit that's working normally can just be standby.

  • What blink patterns generally mean

  • 1–9 counted blinks (one light): a specific fault — sensor, fan, or board depending on the number and the brand. Trane's NAXSMT series, for example, uses 2-blink = indoor coil/room thermistor fault, 4-blink = indoor control system, 5-blink = outdoor power system abnormality.
  • Alternating lights (e.g. run+timer together): on many brands this class means communication failure between indoor and outdoor units — check the inter-unit wiring before suspecting boards.
  • All lights flashing together: usually power-supply or main-board level — less DIY-relevant.
  • Defrost light steady (not blinking) in winter: that's NORMAL — it's the defrost cycle melting frost off the outdoor coil. Don't troubleshoot a working defrost.

  • Gree / Carrier (Gree OEM): display shows E/F/H codes directly; wall units with no display use a small window on the case.
