Mini-Split Running But Not Cooling? Here's the Honest Diagnostic

A mini split that runs but doesn't cool is usually choked by dirty filters or a blocked coil, not out of refrigerant. Work through the airflow checks first — they're free. A genuinely low charge means there's a leak, and leaks are a technician job.

The free checks first (15 minutes, fixes most cases)

Never run a mini split in COOL mode with the filters out for more than a test minute — dust loads directly onto the coil and it's much harder to clean than a filter.

  • Confirm the mode. A surprising number of "not cooling" calls are units left in HEAT, FAN, or DRY mode. The remote shows a sun (heat), snowflake (cool), fan, or water-droplet (dry) icon. Set it to COOL explicitly.
  • Check the setpoint. The unit won't cool if the set temperature is at or below room temperature. Set it 4–5°C (about 8°F) below room temp and give it 10 minutes.
  • Pull the filters. Slide them out of the indoor unit and hold them up to a light. If you can't see light through them, wash them in lukewarm water, let them dry fully, and refit. A clogged filter alone can cut cooling output by half.
  • Look at the indoor coil. Behind the filters: if you see fuzzy gray matting on the coil surface, airflow is blocked at the coil, not just the filter. That needs a proper coil clean (below).
  • Check the outdoor unit. It should be running with a steady fan and hum. If the fan spins but the compressor never starts, or the unit is buried in leaves or snow-melt debris, that's your answer.
  • The honest rule: airflow problems cause most "not cooling" complaints. Do these five checks before you spend a dollar.

    How to measure whether it's actually cooling

  • Grab a digital thermometer with a probe or IR thermometer. Measure room air about 2 m (6 ft) from the unit, then measure the air coming out of the louvers.
  • In COOL mode on a healthy system, the air out should be 8–14°C (14–25°F) colder than room air. Less than a 6°C (10°F) difference after 15 minutes means the system genuinely isn't moving heat — go down the cause list.
  • In HEAT mode the same test applies in reverse; note that in heat mode the outdoor unit periodically defrosts and blows cool indoor air for a few minutes. That's normal, not a fault.
  • Measuring takes the guesswork out. It also gives you hard numbers to give a technician if you end up calling one.

    Ranked causes when the free checks pass

    Ice on the copper lines or the indoor coil is a stop-and-call symptom in cooling mode. Ice means low airflow or low charge; running it frozen repeatedly can sludge liquid refrigerant back into the compressor and kill it.

  • 1. Dirty indoor or outdoor coil. A matted indoor coil or a cottonwood-fuzzed outdoor coil silently kills capacity. Clean the indoor coil with a no-rinse evaporator coil foam cleaner; gently hose the outdoor coil fins (power off at the breaker first) from the inside out.
  • 2. Blocked louvers or recirculation. Furniture, curtains, or a badly placed unit short-cycling its own exhaust will read as "not cooling." Also check that someone hasn't partially closed the louvers with the remote.
  • 3. Fan problems. Indoor blower spinning weakly (motor capacitor or mucky drum) or the outdoor fan not spinning while the compressor runs. Both usually need a technician — but knowing which fan is misbehaving halves the diagnostic.
  • 4. Low refrigerant charge. This is the one everyone suspects first and the one that's least often the cause. A mini split doesn't "use up" refrigerant — if it's low, it leaked. Signs: ice forming on the indoor coil or the larger copper line, and a small temperature split. Do not add refrigerant yourself. Handling refrigerant legally requires EPA 608 certification in the US, and newer R-32 systems are mildly flammable (A2L) — this is firmly technician territory.
  • 5. Compressor not running. Outdoor fan spins, no compressor hum, and the unit may throw an overload or pressure code. A failed compressor or its starting components is a replacement decision, not a DIY fix.
  • 6. Inverter/board faults. The inverter board isn't driving the compressor correctly — usually accompanied by an error code. Find the code in the brand list before buying anything.
  • When to stop DIY and call a technician

  • Any suspicion of refrigerant leak or low charge — leak detection, repair, and recharge are legally and practically out of DIY range.
  • Compressor or board faults, including any error code that survives a clean power cycle.
  • Electrical symptoms: breaker trips, burning smell, buzzing from the outdoor unit. Stop using the system.
