What P1 means

P1 means the outdoor unit detected abnormal voltage or current and shut down to protect the electronics and compressor from an electrical condition it cannot accept. Persistent P1 needs inverter-board and power-supply diagnosis by a technician.

Causes, ranked

1. 1. Power supply disturbance (sag, surge, or momentary drop) occasional diy-ok

   Check: Power off at the disconnect for 3 minutes, then restart; note whether other devices on the circuit flicker or trip.

   Fix: If P1 clears and does not return, monitor. Recurring P1 needs professional measurement.

2. 2. Undersized or shared circuit / incorrect supply voltage occasional diy-ok

   Check: Confirm the units are on a dedicated circuit of the amperage on the nameplate, with no extension cords or shared large loads.

   Fix: Move other loads off or have the circuit corrected; unresolved P1 goes to a technician.

3. 3. Abnormal compressor current draw (failing compressor or locked rotor) occasional pro-only

   Check: Requires clamp-meter amperage readings against service values.

   Fix: Technician: measure compressor current and diagnose, replace compressor if failing.

4. 4. Inverter IPM / outdoor power board fault occasional pro-only

   Check: Board and module testing is high-voltage technician work.

   Fix: Technician: diagnose the IPM and outdoor PCB, replace the failed module or board.

5. 5. Current or voltage sensor fault on the outdoor board occasional pro-only

   Check: Sensor verification needs a meter and service-manual values.
